The Faculty of Applied Sciences is the largest faculty of TU Delft, with around 550 scientists, a support staff of 250 and 1,800 students. The faculty conducts fundamental, application-oriented research and offers scientific education at the bachelor, master and doctoral levels. The faculty is active in the fields of Life and Health Science & Technology, Nanoscience, Chemical Engineering, Radiation Science & Technology, and Applied Physics.

The Department of Bionanoscience, established at the TU Delft in 2010, is dedicated to research at the interface between nanoscience, synthetic biology, and cell biology. The department studies cellular complexity down to the molecular level, from a fundamental scientific point of view. The new department operates as part of the Kavli Institute of Nanoscience Delft and occupies a leading international position in the field of nanobiology.

Job description

We are looking for a highly motivated research technician with significant biological or biochemical research experience to work in the biophysics research group of Dr. Liedewij Laan (see in the Department of Bionanoscience. This young and growing research group has an international and multidisciplinary character and performs research at the interface of evolution and biophysics. One of the directions focuses on reconstituting minimal evolvable protein networks. The selected candidate's main task will be the purification of these proteins.


The candidate should have (at least) a Bachelor degree and research experience in the field of molecular biology or biochemistry, or a closely related field. Experience with protein purification is required. The candidate should excel in protein purification skills and should also be able to work independently, be creative and precise, communicate well in teams with PhD students and colleague technicians, and have excellent verbal skills in English. Candidates with a Master or PhD are also invited to apply. For this vacancy, an EU work permit is needed. While the job in the Laan lab is defined for 0.8 FTE, there likely will be options to extend the function by combining it with related work in adjacent groups in the strongly growing Department of Bionanoscience.
