Applied Sciences

The Faculty of Applied Sciences is the largest faculty of TU Delft, with around 550 scientists, a support staff of 250 and 1,800 students. The faculty conducts fundamental, application-oriented research and offers scientific education at the bachelor, master and doctoral levels. The faculty is active in the fields of Life and Health Science & Technology, Nanoscience, Chemical Engineering, Radiation Science & Technology, and Applied Physics.

The Department of Bionanoscience, established at the TU Delft in 2010, is dedicated to research at the interface between nanoscience, synthetic biology, and cell biology. The department studies cellular complexity down to the molecular level, from both fundamental scientific and application-oriented points of view. The new department operates as part of the Kavli Institute of Nanoscience at the Faculty of Applied Sciences and aims at a leading international position.

The Youk Lab is a well-funded (ERC, NWO Vidi) lab that focuses on systems and synthetic biology of yeasts and mammalian cells (embryonic stem cells).

Job description

We are looking for a highly motivated technician with significant experience working with yeast to work in Hyun Youk's lab in the Department of Bionanoscience. In particular, we are looking for the following skill set: general experience in molecular cloning, E. coli strain making, and yeast strain making. Experience with mammalian cell cultures (mouse ES cells) is ideal but not required. The candidate will work for the Youk laboratory, whose research focuses on building synthetic genetic circuits in yeast to study principles of multicellularity. The lab also studies cell-cell communication in mouse ES cells. The candidate will help with yeast/E.coli strain construction and mammalian cell cultures, prepare sequencing libraries, work with students, help train new lab members, manage and order lab supplies, and participate in lab meetings.


The candidate should have a degree in the field of biology, biochemistry, or biotechnology with research experience in yeast and or mammalian cell culture / biology. A candidate with an MSc or PhD is also invited to apply. Good communication skills in English and pleasant interpersonal skills are required. Excellent lab work skills and broad knowledge of techniques are ideal.
