Education and Student Affairs

Education and Student Affairs (ESA) provides educational support for the TU Delft (BSc, MSc and PhD) and currently consists of four departments: the Shared Service Center (SSC), Central International Office (CIO), Student & Staff Facilities (SSF), and Sports and Culture (S&C). ESA is known within the TU Delft for the high-quality service it provides and has a pro-active and solution-oriented culture. The SSF Department is responsible for Career & Counseling Services and Educational Support, including support for various educationally innovative programmes such as the Extension School for Open & Online Learning and the TU Delft Teaching Lab currently being established. The department’s mission is to be a catalyst for educational innovation at the TU Delft.

The SSF Department is being reorganised into Academic Services (AS), as part of a current process of restructuring ESA. The new AS Department will consist of two teams. The Student Development team focuses on the development of the individual student, from career advice and psychological support to career events. This team is also responsible for organising specific educational programmes such as the Doctoral Education Programme, aimed at PhD candidates, and the central part of the Honours Programme (HP), aimed at excellent Bachelor and Master students.
The Teaching & Learning Support team focuses on the development and support of the individual lecturer and on education development, including on-campus as well as blended and online education.

Job description

The AS Department Head has the following responsibilities:
1. Serves as member of the ESA MT: contributes to the realisation of the TU Delft’s strategic plan for 2018-2024, and implements ESA’s 2018-2021 organisational development plan.
2. Heads the AS Department: operations, budgetting, HR (continues development and employability), and translation of the new educational vision into strategies for further development of Student Development services and Teaching & Learning Support.
3. Implements policy themes: varying, including lecturer professionalisation, ICTO, Doctoral Education, disability, in cooperation with the ESA policy team.
4. Quality assurance and improvement of AS’s services in the areas of Student Development and Teaching & Learning Support.
5. Supports the VPEO, education directors and Director of ESA in educational innovation programmes and networks (EdX, LDE.CEL, 4TU.CEE, CDIO, IDEA League, Open Education Consortium).
The AS Department Head is an important player in realising the TU Delft’s strategic ambition to be recognised as a World Class University in the area of education and to share the TU Delft’s knowledge with the world (Educate the World). As Head of AS, you contribute to the further expansion of this frontrunner position in the area of educational innovation at the TU Delft. The Head of AS will also be deputy Director of ESA.


You have a passion for supporting students and for development and innovation in education. You have a Master’s degree or equivalent qualifications and well developed analytical skills. You are a team player, collaborate well with others, are persuasive, have good social and communication skills, and readily take initiative. You have ample experience with leading and developing (education) professionals, preferably in an institution of higher education focused on technical education. You follow closely (inter)national developments in the area of educational development.
The TU Delft is an international, bilingual organisation. Outstanding proficiency in spoken and written Dutch and English is required for this position.
