The 3mE Faculty trains committed engineering students, PhD candidates and post-doctoral researchers in groundbreaking scientific research in the fields of mechanical, maritime and materials engineering. 3mE is the epitome of a dynamic, innovative faculty, with a European scope that contributes demonstrable economic and social benefits.


The research activities within the Biomechanical Engineering Department (http://www.bmeche.tudelft.nl) are carried out on a world-class international level, focusing on a range of topics spanning medical instruments and safety, neuromuscular control, human-machine interaction, bio-inspired robotics, tissue biomechanics and biomaterials.

The STW-funded NeuroCIMT program (http://www.neurocimt.nl) creates an enabling technology platform for systems that integrate precision diagnostics with individualized treatment in patients with neurological diseases and sensory impairments. Eight interrelated projects add to the core of NeuroCIMT in developing advanced neurostimulation technology (cochlear implants, pain diagnosis and motor relearning), real-time biofeedback technology (for reducing spasticity, controlling blood pressure and improving daily activities), and assistive devices (to compensate for spasticity and contractures).


The Biomechatronics and Human-Machine Interaction Chair, led by Prof. Frans C.T. van der Helm, is internationally recognized as one of the world leaders in the field of neuromuscular control. The Chair develops fundamentally new concepts of neuromuscular control, involving large-scale musculoskeletal models like the shoulder, elbow and hand, and recordings of the reflexive feedback and reflex modulation. Applications are in neuro-rehabilitation, automotive engineering, tele-manipulation, upper extremity prosthetics and aerospace engineering.

Job description

The Department of Biomechanical Engineering at the Delft University of Technology is seeking a postdoc for 34 months to perform research within the national STW-perspective program NeuroCIMT. We are looking for an independent mind, who takes initiative in a team, is able to translate high-level goals into small packages, and can provide guidance to the PhD students in this multidisciplinary program. You will implement and translate our novel system identification approaches to unravel the neuromuscular, auditory and pain perception systems using high-density EEG. You will work in close collaboration with clinical researchers and industrial partners throughout the Netherlands. Your duties will be diverse, ranging from experiment design to the analysis of EEG from patients, writing scientific papers and presenting your work at international conferences.

Requirements

Applicants should meet the following requirements:
• A strong background in EEG, data processing, signal analysis, and preferably system identification.
• PhD degree related to the field of (bio)physics, biomedical engineering, neuroinformatics or equivalent.
• Self-motivated, pro-active and able to operate independently in a multidisciplinary team.
• Strong communication skills and a fluent command of English.
