Aerospace Engineering

The faculty of Aerospace Engineering at Delft University of Technology is one of the world's largest faculties devoted entirely to aerospace engineering. In the Netherlands it is the only research and education institute directly related to the aerospace engineering sector. It covers the whole spectrum of aerospace engineering subjects. In aeronautics, the faculty covers subjects ranging from aerodynamics and flight propulsion to structures and materials and from control and simulation to air transport and operations. In astronautics, topics include astrodynamics, space missions and space systems engineering. The faculty has around 2,700 BSc and MSc students, 225 PhD candidates and 27 professors supported by scientific staff.

The project uniquely combines the expertise of three groups from three different departments. The Wind Energy section is part of the Aerodynamics, Wind Energy and Flight Performance and Propulsion (AWEP) Department in the Faculty of Aerospace Engineering. Within the Wind Energy section a new Aeroacoustic group is focusing on applications of permeable materials for airfoil noise reduction.

The Aircraft Noise and Climate Effects (ANCE) section focuses on modelling the effects of aviation on the environment with respect to both noise and emissions. The Aerospace Structures and Materials (ASM) group has extensive experience in advanced materials.

Job description

The present research project aims at developing the new generation of porous foam inserts for the abatement of flap side edge noise and leading edge impingement noise. Most promising materials for noise absorption are open foams. Half-open foams are conventionally manufactured with isotropic holes and mainly used as noise dampers. Modern 3D printing technologies allow the creation of new metallic open foams with several innovative characteristics, including coating and activation of the material shape.
The main deliverables of the project are:
1) aerodynamic and aeroacoustic investigation of the flow field induced by the impingement of slipstream/tip vortex flow features on an airfoil wing
2) specification of the optimal foam characteristics and shape for a treated leading edge of a pylon with an upstream propeller and for a flap
3) aerodynamic and aeroacoustics study of the flow properties of the foam material in function of the size of the impinging flow structures.


The candidate should have an MSc degree in an area relevant to the subject, e.g. aerospace engineering, (applied) physics, applied mathematics, electrical engineering, or mechanical engineering. A combination of good mathematical/analytical skills and a strong interest in performing experiments is required. A solid knowledge of signal processing and advanced programming skills are advantageous for this position. As the project is part of a larger research programme, good social and collaborative skills are also important.
