The Faculty of Applied Sciences is the largest faculty of TU Delft, with around 550 scientists, a support staff of 250 and 1,800 students. The faculty conducts fundamental, application-oriented research and offers scientific education at the bachelor, master and doctoral levels. The faculty is active in the fields of Life and Health Science & Technology, Nanoscience, Chemical Engineering, Radiation Science & Technology, and Applied Physics.

The Department of Biotechnology ( engages in research in the fields of biocatalysis, bioprocess engineering, cell systems engineering, environmental biotechnology, industrial microbiology, and biotechnology and society. The department offers a stimulating environment in the biosciences, combining fundamental research, engineering, and design, all directed towards biotechnological process innovations. The department moved recently to a brand-new building, which also houses the Bionanoscience and Chemical Engineering departments. In our recently established virtual TU Delft Institute of BioEngineering we explore interfaces with other departments and faculties at the TU Delft.

Job description

Biotechnology is pivotal to several grand societal challenges, posing new research questions in various directions including circular and biobased economy development, the sustainable production of renewable materials, specialty chemicals, pharmaceuticals and energy carriers. At the TU Delft we wish to strengthen our leadership in the research areas of bioprocess- and fermentation technology, down-stream processing and/or (cell) systems engineering with up to five staff positions. We are looking for talented individuals who use process engineering to design biotechnological innovations. We welcome applications from candidates who are eager to develop an independent research line based on creative, innovative research ideas. The positions come with funding for PhD students for ambitious projects.
Candidates are expected to contribute to our education activities, including the popular BSc and MSc programmes on Life Science and Technology and Molecular Science and Technology, the international, advanced (post-graduate) courses run by Biotech Academy Delft and online courses (MOOCs, such as on Industrial Biotechnology). We also contribute to programmes of other faculties such as Industrial Ecology, Sustainable Energy Technology, Engineering and Policy Analysis. We work with novel and digital education modules for blended education in alignment with the Extension School.

A Tenure Track, a process leading up to a permanent appointment with the prospect of becoming an Associate or full Professor, offers young, talented academics a clear and attractive career path. During the Tenure Track, you will have the opportunity to develop into an internationally acknowledged and recognised academic. We offer a structured career and personal development programme designed to offer individual academics as much support as possible. For more information about the Tenure Track and the personal development programme, please visit

The candidate has:
• an MSc and PhD in a subject relevant for biochemical engineering/bioprocess technology/fermentation technology and or (cell) system engineering.
• a proven track record in research, and a career that allows successful applications for individual grants such as VIDI/VICI or ERC grants.
• affinity for and experience in teaching and development of academic education (at the BSc and MSc levels).
• proficiency in English and, for foreign candidates, the willingness to learn the Dutch language.
• ambition and ability to develop a leading research line in the subject described in the position description.
• affinity with research at the interface of academia and industry, and with working in multidisciplinary teams.

Conditions of employment

A tenure-track position is offered for six years. Based on performance indicators agreed upon at the start of the appointment, a decision will be made by the fifth year whether to offer you a permanent faculty position.
