Faculty Civil Engineering and Geosciences

The position is located within the department Mechanics, Management & Design (3MD). 3MD focuses on the design, mechanics, materials and management of civil infrastructures and buildings. A multi-scale research approach is followed, starting at micro-scale (materials), to meso-scale (structures) and to macro-scale (infrastructures/systems). The department governs the entire life cycle from develop, design, build, maintain, operate to demolish or reuse. The department has strong competences in modelling and design for both civil infrastructures as well as buildings.

Novel, advanced civil engineering materials offer solutions to current societal challenges regarding safety, durability and sustainability. The group Applied Mechanics focuses on the computational analysis of multiscale failure processes in these materials. The analysis of failure processes involves many length scales and co-existing mechanical, chemical and physical processes. It is an interesting challenge to bridge the length scales through multiscale computational modelling and to couple the different processes through multi-physics computational modelling, which are core elements of this research programme. For this purpose, accurate, robust and well-founded models are developed for temporal and spatial discretisation, and algorithms are constructed for the efficient, accurate and robust solution of the ensuing non-linear algebraic equations. In recent research, there is a focus on the computational design of novel civil engineering materials such as polymers, ceramics, randomly fibre-reinforced materials and composite laminates through virtual materials testing. Furthermore, advanced nonlinear multiscale modelling techniques, and extreme computational mechanics problems (e.g. long-term variable amplitude fatigue loading, impact and blast loading) are investigated.

The faculty of Civil Engineering & Geosciences (CEG) is committed to outstanding international research and education in the field of civil engineering, applied earth sciences, traffic and transport, water technology and delta technology. The research covers global social issues and is closely connected to education as well as the work of a wide range of knowledge institutions. CEG is convinced that Open Science helps to realise these goals and supports its scientists in integrating Open Science in their research practice. The Faculty of CEG comprises 28 research groups in the following seven departments: Materials Mechanics Management & Design, Engineering Structures, Geoscience and Engineering, Geoscience and Remote Sensing, Transport & Planning, Hydraulic Engineering and Water Management.

Functie omschrijving

Do you have experience in the modelling of novel, advanced civil engineering (CE) materials in order to offer solutions to current societal challenges regarding safety, durability and sustainability? More specifically, do you have the computational mechanics skills to model manufactured CE materials? We are seeking an assistant professor for this specialization.

To benefit from the flexibility offered by manufacturing technologies, a new class of computational techniques is required to support the analysis and design of products, materials and processes. Especially 3D-printing of CE-materials will be a key technology to meet future demands on materials and structures with tunable properties, in view of the advantage of freedom of shape, customisation and on-demand production. The MSM tenure track focuses on development of multiscale modelling techniques to predict (i) residual stress/disortion, surface topology and microstructure including defects, (ii) post-production hydration processes, (iii) microstructure anisotropy due to printing direction, and (iv) the mechanical response of interfaces. Close cooperation with partners in knowledge institutions, other scientific partners and industry is important. The tenure track includes publishing in peer reviewed journal papers, acquiring funding for research (industry, EU and NWO) and contributing to courses on MSc level.

Functie eisen

We seek a colleague who has the dedication to pursue a career in academia. You have a scientific track record, and are able to build and give a firm scientific contribution to our knowledge and understanding of modelling of manufactured CE materials. You can, through your research, personality and teaching qualities, inspire co-workers and students alike. Our future colleague is expected to establish a strong, externally funded research programme and is committed to excel in teaching at undergraduate (Dutch or English) as well as graduate level (English).

  • You hold a master degree in civil or mechanical engineering, as well as a PhD and additional experience in a postdoctoral or industrial position.

  • Experience in modelling of mechanical characteristics of printed materials would be highly recommended.

  • You like to work in a team, like to work in a cooperative and amicable environment and possess good organisational and communication skills.

  • You must be proficient in spoken and written English. International applicants are encouraged to acquire knowledge of Dutch.

At the start of the tenure-track you will be appointed as Assistant Professor for the duration of six years. Section leader, department leader and you will agree upon expected performance and (soft) skills. You will receive a start-up package and formal feedback on performance and skills during annual assessment meetings and the mid-term evaluation. If the performance and skills are evaluated positively at the end of the tenure track, you will be appointed in a permanent Assistant Professor position.
