Faculty Applied Sciences

The Faculty of Applied Sciences is the largest faculty of TU Delft, with around 550 scientists, a support staff of 250 and 1,800 students. The faculty conducts fundamental, application-oriented research and offers scientific education at the bachelor, master and doctoral levels. The faculty is active in the fields of Life and Health Science & Technology, Nanoscience, Chemical Engineering, Radiation Science & Technology, and Applied Physics.

Research in the department is aimed at developing novel instrumentation and methodology to push existing boundaries in imaging science and sensing. Also, we advance the fundamental understanding of waves and particles, their interaction with molecules and materials, and the analysis of the signals generated during interaction. Our work has clear societal impact in the areas of life sciences, healthcare, and industry. We are eager to further expand in areas of fundamental as well as applied imaging that would complement and strengthen our research efforts (

Functie omschrijving

The Department of Imaging Physics at TU Delft invites applications for an Assistant Professor (tenure-track) faculty position. Successful candidates are expected to establish an independent research line in an emerging area of imaging physics that adds synergistically to our current research portfolio. We are especifically interested in candidates that want to setup up a program in photonics and/or optical instrumentation targeting extreme light conditions. This can include, for instance, very low light or low signal-to-noise levels, or spatial confinement and application in metamaterial based instruments, or the use of coherence in for example interferometric approaches. While the relevance of this research is expected to be broad we see particular potential for impact in the fields of space optics and optics at low photon levels and foresee excellent opportunities for a strong connection with the Netherlands Institute for Space Research (SRON).

Functie eisen

We seek principal investigators with an outstanding scientific track record, researchers with a creative and collaborative mentality who appreciate scientific and engineering challenges in imaging physics and who, through their research, management skills, and teaching qualities can inspire co-workers and students alike. Successful candidates are expected to establish a strong, externally funded research program and to be committed to excellence in teaching at undergraduate (Dutch or English) as well as graduate level (English). Candidates are expected to be competitive in attracting personal (amongst others ERC funded) grants. Applicants should hold a PhD with several years of additional experience in a postdoctoral or industrial position. Dutch language skills are not required. We especially welcome applications from female scientists.


At the start of the tenure-track you will be appointed as Assistant Professor for the duration of six years. Section leader, department leaders and you will agree upon expected performance and (soft) skills. You will receive formal feedback on performance and skills during annual assessment meetings and the mid-term evaluation. If the performance and skills are evaluated positively at the end of the tenure track, you will be appointed in a permanent Assistant Professor position.
