Assistant Professor (Tenure track) Offshore Renewables

Department/faculty: Faculty Mechanical, Maritime and Materials Engineering
Level: Doctorate
Working hours: 38-40 hours weekly
Contract: Tenure track
Salary: 3545 - 5513 euros monthly (full-time basis)

Faculty Mechanical, Maritime and Materials Engineering

Research in the Department of Maritime and Transport Technology focuses on the design, production, management and control of marine, offshore, dredging and transport systems and their equipment. The department is also responsible for the BSc and MSc programmes in Marine Technology, shares responsibility for the MSc programmes in Offshore and Dredging Engineering and also participates in the MSc programme in Mechanical Engineering.

Job description

The energy transition plays an increasingly important role in Offshore & Dredging Engineering. Energy has to be generated and used in a sustainable way. The Oceans form a huge resource of renewable energy that we are only beginning to exploit. Offshore wind is really taking off. Other forms of Ocean Energy, such as tidal and current energy, ocean wave energy, ocean thermal energy conversion (OTEC), salinity gradient based energy and offshore solar are still in earlier phases of development. Offshore engineering will contribute to designing, installing, operating and maintaining these offshore renewable energy conversion systems. It is crucial to have a deep understanding of core disciplines such as engineering mechanics, fluid mechanics, and offshore energy conversion. It is also important to have a solid knowledge on the equipment level.

The offered position explores the field offshore renewable energy. Research can be experimental, simulations, or theory, and can be either applied and fundamental. The candidate will develop a new research program in the field of offshore engineering that fits within the department's strategy. The candidate will initiate and coordinate research and will teach and supervise BSc, MSc, and PhD students. In principle, the position will be filled at the Assistant Professor level (tenure track). For exceptionally strong candidates, an appointment at the Associate Professor (tenured) level will be considered.

A Tenure Track, a process leading up to a permanent appointment with the prospect of becoming an Associate or full Professor, offers young, talented academics a clear and attractive career path. During the Tenure Track, you will have the opportunity to develop into an internationally acknowledged and recognized academic. We offer a structured career and personal development program designed to offer individual academics as much support as possible. For more information about the Tenure Track and the personal development program, please visit http://www.tudelft.nl/tenuretrack.

Requirements

We are looking for a researcher with a strong background and PhD in mechanical engineering or marine technology and an affinity to engineering mechanics, fluid mechanics, and offshore energy conversion. It should be clear that the researcher is ready to start his/her own research line.
The candidate:
1.  has a proven track record and publications related to the topics mentioned;
2.  is able to bridge the gap between fundamental and more applied projects;
3.  has excellent communication skills; and
4.  is able to teach and supervise students at the BSc, MSc and PhD levels.

Conditions of employment

A tenure-track position is offered for six years. Based on performance indicators agreed upon at the start of the appointment, a decision will be made by the fifth year whether to offer the candidate a permanent faculty position.
