Faculty Industrial Design Engineering

The faculty of Industrial Design Engineering is the largest and broadest scientific design institute in the world, with over 2,000 students, more than 6,000 alumni and 300 staff (researchers and lecturers, including designers from industrial practice). The faculty aims to contribute to a better living environment and respond to social challenges by combining human values and desires with technological feasibility and economic viability. We are excellently placed to do so, as we ground design methods and skills in scientific knowledge from a wide range of disciplines, leading to concrete solutions.

The faculty of Industrial Design Engineering consists of three departments: Industrial Design Engineering (ID), Design Engineering (DE) and Product Innovation Management (PIM)

The Design Engineering Department is a centre for system-oriented product development and innovation, manufactoring to sustainability. The aim of our work is to empower designers through breakthrough technology innovations and to contribute to the innovative capability and competitiveness of the creative industry sector.

The long-term ambition of the department is to develop design methods digital design facilities that allow intelligent creative design solutions to be moved almost seamlessly from imagination to manufacturing, in a sustainable way. This is informed by three long-term industrial design trends:

- a future where most products and services will built around machine intelligence and will exhibit reactive or adaptive behaviours

- a future where more and more products and services will be sustainable by design and support a circular product lifecycle

- a future where agile fabrication technologies such as 3D printing, additive manufactoring and robotic manufacturing will be widely used for fabrication of personalised products

Job description

he rise of Artificial Intelligence is rapidly transforming product innovation, design and development. Technologies such as machine learning, machine perception and planning create tremendous opportunities for intelligent products and services, and open perspectives for Artificial Intelligence-enabled design methods and development processes.

The Design Engineering Department, part of the Faculty of Industrial Design Engineering, is seeking a new chair in Artificial Intelligence and Design who can drive a technology-focused, design-oriented research agenda at the intersection of design, intelligent systems and AI. Topics of particular interest are human-centred intelligent systems, intelligent user interfaces, AI methods in design, and responsible and trustworthy AI.

In particular, the Professor is expected to lead the development of an AI research and teaching infrastructure covering data, algorithm and system aspects and be actively involved in curriculum development and teaching at both the bachelor and master levels.

The Professor of Artificial Intelligence and Design will be embedded in the ‘Intelligence’ cluster of the Design Engineering Department and will be expected to develop close working relationship with the chair of Internet of Things. The Internet of Things group focuses on the core theme on Design for the Internet of Things and researches design and development methods for data-intensive connected products and services from sensing the cloud data processing. The new Artificial Intelligence and Design chair will strengthen the data and connected product focus of the Internet of Things chair by adding expertise in fundamental Artificial technologies, Artificial Intelligence-enabled products and human-aspects of Artificial Intelligence-enabled products. In addition, the Design Engineering Department offers rich opportunities for collaboration with the department’s 'Fabrication' and ‘Sustainability' clusters, related to printed electronics, smart materials, additive manufacturing and circular economy.
