The 3mE Faculty educates committed engineering students, PhD candidates and post-doctoral researchers in ground breaking scientific research in the fields of mechanical, maritime and materials engineering. 3mE strives to be a dynamic, innovative faculty, with a European scope that contributes demonstrable economic and social benefits.

The Department of PME focuses on developing knowledge and methods for small, innovative high-precision devices and systems, such as precision equipment and scientific instrumentation for the high-tech industry and the Bio - Health sector. Increasing miniaturisation and function density, and improving precision, speed and reliability are the key topics in our work. Our approach is multidisciplinary, fundamental and inspired by industry needs.

Job description

The Department of Precision and Microsystem Engineering (PME) invites applications for a junior (Assistant Professor, UD) or senior (Associate Professor, UHD) faculty position in the area of ‘Soft Micro- and Nanosystem Technology for Life Sciences and Biology’. Candidates are expected to be, or to be on their way to becoming, authorities in their own field of research, and to complement and enrich the existing research programmes in the department. They will have access to state of the art infrastructure at central cleanroom facilities (Else Kooi and Kavli Lab), and to equipment owned or co-owned by PME like the 2-photon and imprint lithography tools, 3D printers, micro laser - cutting, SEM, FIB, and the computer cluster for modelling and simulations.

The department wants to expand and strengthen its activities in the area of Micro and Nano Engineering for the Bio and Life Sciences. We therefore want to hire a person who has a track record in microsystem and nano engineering, and experience or at least an explicit interest in the fabrication of devices for Life Sciences or Biology. If you have also worked with polymers, conductive polymers and their micro structuring in the past, have a reasonably good understanding of their chemistry, and preferably hands-on cleanroom and lithography experience, you are the candidate we are looking for.
Your research activities shall be on the physical behaviour, the design and fabrication of soft micro- or nanosystems for applications in Life Sciences, Health or Biology, rather than on bio-medical or health-pharmaceutical experiments. The latter shall be conducted in collaborations with the respective experts or companies in the field.
Typical devices of interest combine fluidic with mechanical and electronic functions. Possible foci of the research program are on flexible, polymer-based sensors and microsystems, biodegradable or disposable MEMS, wearable microsystems, organ-on-chip, or packaging for biological and health applications.


You are interested in teaching, introducing students to scientific research and supervising MSc and PhD students. Moreover you are acquainted with microfluidics and willing to accept teaching obligations in that field, as this is a key topic in many Life Science and Biology applications.

Requirements

You must have the following qualifications:


  • PhD degree in Mechanical Engineering, Microfabrication and Microengineering, Applied Physics, Nanoscience, or comparable;

  • Interest and experience in topics such as polymer science, scalable nanomanufacturing, smart material structures, sensor systems, optics, micro-fluidics;

  • A few years of experience as a post-doc or Assistant Professor, and experience outside the Netherlands;

  • Excellent track record in scientific research, as evidenced by papers in international peer-reviewed journals;

  • Proven ability to deal with scientific and engineering challenges in close interaction with industrial partners;

  • Organisational and managerial skills to interact and cooperate effectively with staff and students alike;

  • (Some) experience in academic teaching and the willingness to follow courses to become a certified university grade teacher.

Furthermore, we expect you to:


  • Develop, conduct and supervise high-quality academic research;

  • Teach general and specialist courses at undergraduate and post-graduate levels, and inspire students through teaching and post-graduate supervision;

  • Meet or acquire the TU Delft specific standards for the English competency of the teaching staff (typically C1 or higher);

  • Learn the Dutch language to B1 level or higher;

  • Interact and collaborate with other researchers and specialists in academia and industry within multidisciplinary research projects;

  • Bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and the development of new, innovative technologies;

  • Establish and execute externally funded research programmes;

  • Be an inspiring contribution to our staff.

Conditions of employment

A tenure track position is offered for a maximum of six years. Tenure Track is a process leading up to a permanent appointment with the prospect of becoming an Associate Professor. Based on performance indicators agreed upon at the start of the appointment, a decision will be made at the end of the fifth year whether to offer you a permanent faculty position.


The salary for a Tenure Track (Assistant Professor) position is min. €3.545 to max. €5.513 per month gross.


For exceptionally strong candidates, a shortened tenure track period or Associate Professor position can be considered.


For an Associate Professor position different terms of employment apply. Depending on background and experience, the salary can range from min. €4.911 to max. €6.567 per month gross.
