Faculty Applied Sciences

The Faculty of Applied Sciences is the largest faculty of TU Delft, with around 550 scientists, a support staff of 250 and 1,800 students. The faculty conducts fundamental, application-oriented research and offers scientific education at the bachelor, master and doctoral levels. The faculty is active in the fields of Life and Health Science & Technology, Nanoscience, Chemical Engineering, Radiation Science & Technology, and Applied Physics.

The Department of Radiation Science & Technology ( is one of the six Departments of the Faculty of Applied Sciences of the TU Delft and focuses on research and education in materials, energy and health with radiation as the common denominator. Fields of interest are sustainable nuclear energy, medical radioisotopes, materials for energy storage and conversion, medical technology for diagnosis and therapy, and advanced instrumentation.

Within the Storage of Electrochemical Energy section fundamental research towards a wide scope of chemistries takes place including Li and Na based anodes and cathodes, solid state electrolytes, Na and Zn aqueous chemistries and Mg cathodes. The research focusses on understanding of atomic to mesoscopic processes that determine the macroscopic battery performance parameters as well as the development of new materials. Besides the battery lab, fully equipped for lab scale material synthesis up to battery assembly, the facilities include the nuclear facilities of RID (Neutron Diffraction, SANS, Neutron Reflectometry, Neutron Depth Profiling, Neutron Imaging and positron facilities), XRD and solid state NMR and other spectroscopic techniques. In addition the group has expertise on DFT and macroscopic modelling, which is often combined with the experimental work to build comprehensive understanding of fundamental mechanisms in batteries.

Job description

We are looking for a technician who is motivated to work in a stimulating and dynamic research environment in the field of battery research and radiation sciences at the Reactor Institute Delft of the Delft University of Technology. You will be working together with Bachelor, Master and PhD students, technicians and scientists on the development and maintenance of experimental setups for battery research as well as radiation related equipment such as X-ray diffraction. The work takes place in a strongly interactive and flexible environment offering many opportunities to develop.


The candidate should have a Bachelor degree in the field of Chemistry, Applied Science, or Materials Science and Technology, preferably with practical or research experience in one of these fields. Candidates with an MSc are also invited to apply. Good communication skills in English are required.

Conditions of employment

This position has an amount of 38 working hours per week (1 fte). The offer contains a temporary appointment for 1 year with the possibility of extension. The salary is based on scale 7 with a maximum of € 3052 gross per month. TU Delft offers a customisable compensation package, a discount for health insurance and sport memberships, and a monthly work costs contribution. Flexible work schedules can be arranged. An International Children’s Centre offers child care and an international primary school. Salary and benefits are in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities.
