The Department of Bionanoscience focuses on research at the interface between nanoscience, synthetic biology, and cell biology. It studies single cells in all their complexity down to the molecular level, from both fundamental scientific and application points of view. This vibrant department operates as part of the Kavli Institute of Nanoscience at the Faculty of Applied Sciences and occupies a leading international position.



The Faculty of Applied Sciences is the largest faculty of TU Delft, with around 550 scientists, a support staff of 250 and 1,800 students. The faculty conducts fundamental, application-oriented research and offers scientific education at the bachelor, master and doctoral levels. The faculty is active in the fields of Life and Health Science & Technology, Nanoscience, Chemical Engineering, Radiation Science & Technology, and Applied Physics.  



The Nynke Dekker Lab is a highly successful single-molecule biophysics research lab within the Department of Bionanoscience at the TU Delft. Our lab focuses its studies on understanding DNA and RNA replication both in vitro and in vivo. We quantitatively characterize replication processes individually and in the cellular environment. To do so, we employ cutting-edge techniques including advanced single-molecule fluorescence, magnetic and optical tweezers, and microfluidics. Studying the dynamics of molecular processes at the single-molecule level requires broad expertise; as such, our lab is composed of a multidisciplinary team of international scientists with training in biophysics, biochemistry, or cell biology. You will be part of this group and will interact actively with current members.  

Job description

To enable the research in the Nynke Dekker Lab (http://nynkedekkerlab.tudelft.nl), we develop our own software to actively control our experiments, and we perform substantial image processing and data analysis. We are looking for a skilled research scientist or programmer to support our researchers in the development and maintenance of our software and in the data analysis efforts. This position requires a balance between technical and scientific skills in the support of biophysical research. The successful candidate will actively participate in problem-solving and implementation of software solutions as well as provide expert advice in data analysis to the members of the team. This can be either a part-time or a full-time position. The position is offered as a one-year contract with the possibility of extension as indicated.



Academic research is highly dynamic, and responsibilities may change frequently! The core responsibilities are:




  • Conceptually understand the instrumentation that requires software development

  • Design and spearhead the development of next-generation software

  • Maintain and tailor current experimental software to users’ needs

  • Develop and implement solutions in data analysis

  • Select and maintain experimental and office PCs

  • (Co-)author publications with other researchers to document the results of your work      

Requirements

Applicants should have the following qualifications:




  • A background in software engineering, physics, or another exact science at an academic level

  • 1-2 years of professional experience in software development in a team setting

  • Excellent knowledge of MatLab or closely related analysis software

  • Knowledge of Python or closely related programming language (e.g. C++)This position has an amount of 28 - 38 working hours per week (0,8 - 1,0 fte). The offer contains a temporary appointment for 2 years. The salary is based on scale 10 with a maximum of € 4274,- gross per month on a fulltime basis. TU Delft offers a customisable compensation package, a discount for health insurance and sport memberships, and a monthly work costs contribution. Flexible work schedules can be arranged. An International Children’s Centre offers child care and an international primary school. Dual Career Services offers support to accompanying partners. Salary and benefits are in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities.

  • Knowledge of ImageJ or willingness to learn it

  • Knowledge of concepts in digital image processing and analysis

  • Familiarity with version control distribution software like Git

  • Familiarity with hardware interfacing or willingness to learn it

  • Aptitude for understanding scientific concepts

  • Good scientific communication skills

  • Ability to communicate in a multidisciplinary environment ranging from physics and biophysics to biology

  • Proven ability to run a project and keep it on track.

  • Working proficiency in English

  •  A PhD degree is a plus but not a formal requirement.

The salary is based on scale 9 or 10 with a maximum of € 4274,- gross per month on a fulltime basis.
