The Faculty of Civil Engineering and Geosciences (CEG) is committed to outstanding international research and education in the field of civil engineering, applied earth sciences, traffic and transport, water technology and delta technology. The research covers global social issues and is closely connected to education as well as the work of a wide range of knowledge institutions. CEG is convinced that Open Science helps to realise these goals and supports its scientists in integrating Open Science in their research practice. The Faculty of CEG comprises 28 research groups in the following seven departments: Materials Mechanics Management & Design, Engineering Structures, Geoscience and Engineering, Geoscience and Remote Sensing, Transport & Planning, Hydraulic Engineering and Water Management.


The position is open at the Transport & Planning Department and within the SAMEN project in the Faculty of Civil Engineering and Geosciences (CEG). CEG is committed to outstanding international research and education in the field of civil engineering, applied earth sciences, traffic and transport, water technology and delta technology. The Transport and Planning Department (T&P) conducts research aimed at understanding the functioning  of civil transport systems, including behaviour of travellers, traffic and transport flows and aimed at interventions to  improve efficiency, safety, resilience and sustainability. T&P (with about 120 staff members) has a strong track record in traffic flow theory, traffic simulation, dynamic traffic management and intelligent transport systems of all transport modes, including railway, pedestrians and urban public transport. Research is conducted at national and international scale in collaboration with public and private partners. A trademark of the department is the use of empirical data, incorporating human factors and advanced modelling tools. T&P is the largest Transport research group at TU Delft, ranked 3rd in the Shanghai World Ranking on Transportation science & Technology in 2018. Next to doing state-of-the-art research, we provide transport and planning courses in the Bachelor programme Civil Engineering, we offer a Transport & Planning track in the MSc programmes Civil Engineering, and we participate in the interfaculty MSc programme Transport Infrastructure and Logistics.

Functie omschrijving

The main responsibilities of the programmer and data manager in the SAMEN project will be: (1) to manage, store, and document the collected data within the project and to create code books; (2) assist the PhDs and postdoc in programming the various scenarios that will be tested in the driving simulator experiments (C/C++, JAVA, Python); (3) clean the collected data and make initial processing, and (4) build and maintain the project website.


The gradual deployment of Automated Vehicles (AV) in traffic will result in a transition period, in which vehicles with various levels of automation and Human Driven Vehicles (HDV) co-exist. As a consequence, new types of interactions will emerge between vehicles at different levels of automation. Proper understanding of how human drivers will respond to AVs, and how AVs could interact with HDVs rather than responding to them is urgent but lacking. This lack of understanding may result in unsafe and inefficient traffic situations. The unique aspect and aim of the proposed project is its focus on understanding and modelling the interactions between human-driven and automated vehicles based on empirical data. In this project behavioural theories and models will be developed and validated for the interactions between AVs and HDVs using a hybrid approach for data collection. We will underpin the behavioural theory using empirical data that we will collect from field tests using AVs. We will use advanced interactive driving simulators to study the interactions between AVs and HDVs. We will scale up the resulting interaction models in a dedicated traffic flow simulation platform to evaluate the implications of mixed traffic on traffic flow and safety.


A programmer and data manager position is open at Delft University of Technology as part of the SAMEN project ‘Safe and Efficient OperAtion of AutoMated and Human DrivEN Vehicles in Mixed Traffic’ and funded by the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO).


In this project several industrial partners, a vehicle manufacturer, road authorities, and knowledge institutes are involved. 

Functie eisen

We are looking for a programmer and data manager who feels at ease collaborating with scientists, (academic) support staff and external contacts. 


Your talents do have a perfect match with this position when you: 


  • HBO education (University of applied sciences) in ICT and programming

  • high level of organisational and communication skills, alongside enthusiasm for supporting scientific activity.

  • have successfull experience in creating code books

  • have experience in programming (C/C++, JAVA, Python)

  • are succesfull in builing and maintaining websites

  • have a background in transport data (or a related field) or managing complex technical projects

  • require a high level of competence in English is advantageous.

  • are a team player 

  • are independent, pro-active and eager to learn

Arbeidsvoorwaarden

The duration for the position is flexible, possibly full-time (38 hours a week) for a duration of two years (24 months), or 50% for a duration of 4 years. The project SAMEN will commence during Autumn 2019. The salary is based on scale 10 (maximum € 3895 - gross per month), based on a full working week.
