The Department of Precision and Microsystems Engineering (PME) carries out research and provides education in the field of high-tech systems and scientific instrumentation. We aim to solve fundamental questions in engineering science and develop design methods to advance the performance of precision systems and medical instruments and devices. Our specific mission is to merge mechanical engineering concepts with micro and nanoscience. We deliver skilled professionals and contribute knowledge to support leadership of the high-tech systems industry.

Functie omschrijving

The Department of Precision and Microsystems Engineering (PME) at Delft University of Technology (TU Delft) is opening a tenure track assistant professor position (f/m), to complement, extend and strengthen the Department’s competence in the field of mechanical metamaterials. 



Metamaterials are architected materials with a rationally designed internal structure to achieve unique properties and functionalities, beyond the bulk properties of the constituent materials. The concept of metamaterials has been explored for a variety of physical domains, including the electromagnetic and optical domain. This faculty position focuses on mechanical metamaterials. Initial work in this domain aimed at enhancing classic mechanical material properties (Poisson’s ratio, strength over weight). Currently, other mechanical(-related) phenomena and functionalities are explored, e.g. dealing with elastic waves, energy dissipation, heat control, and providing controlled deformation and motion.



Metamaterials will provide designers with exciting new opportunities to make radical innovations in a wide variety of applications. In the high tech precision engineering and health sector, expected innovations include embedded and distributed sensing and actuation, and active tuning of properties (static and dynamic mechanical properties, thermal properties), leading to mechatronic metamaterials. The link to other physical domains will render multi-physical metamaterials, e.g. opto-mechanical or fluidic-mechanical metamaterials.



An increasingly important and urgent innovative aspect is the life-cycle design of metamaterials. Metamaterial structures may be conceived, fabricated in common and low cost materials, to replace rare or intrinsically eco-unfriendly materials. The application of metamaterials may lead to improved sustainability at product or system level. Sustainability may also imply implementing strategies for efficient material separation or disassembly techniques for material recovery. 



This vision on the future will only become reality if efficient and effective design, modelling and fabrication methods are developed for mechatronic multi-physical metamaterials.



This position is embedded in the Department of Precision and Microsystems Engineering. The Department has a strong basis in (numerical) design methods, modelling, dynamics, and micro and nano technology and manufacturing. Mechanical metamaterials is one of the emerging department-wide themes, and the successful candidate will bring complementary expertise and help us in gaining a forefront position in this multi-disciplinary research field, to create impact for industry and society.



The successful candidate (f/m) will lead research and education activities in one or more of the following or related themes:




  • Modelling and design methods for mechanical metamaterials

  • Tunable/programmable, active, multi-physics metamaterials

  • Metamaterial design for sustainability

  • Application of metamaterial functionality in for instance precision machines and instruments, micro/nano sensors and actuators, or medical applications.

Salary (ranges from 3.637 to 5.656 for Assistant Professor, (full time based)) and the benefits of 8% holiday allowance, 8.3% end-of-year bonus on top of nominal salary and a minimum of 30 holidays per year, are in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities.
